What is Intuitive Eating Counselling?

Updated: Mar 24

Counselling is a safe and supportive space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Our goal is to help you understand yourself better, develop effective coping strategies, and overcome any challenges you may be facing.

How Does it Intuitive Eating Councelling Work?

Appetite Club Intuitive Eating counselling sessions typically last 55 minutes. We'll work together to determine a schedule that suits your needs, whether it's weekly, bi-weekly, or less frequent.

Two people, one male, one female, sitting on chairs opposite each other.

During each session, you'll have the opportunity to share your concerns openly. Your counsellor will listen attentively, ask insightful questions, and offer guidance to help you gain clarity. Remember, they're there to support you, not to tell you what to do.

The duration of counselling varies from person to person. Some clients benefit from a few weeks of regular sessions, while others may require months or even years of ongoing support. After the initial phase, we often transition to a maintenance period with less frequent sessions, such as quarterly or biannually.

The Scope of Intuitive Eating Therapy

Intuitive eating is a gentle approach to nourishing your body by listening to your hunger and fullness cues. While it can be a powerful tool for improving your relationship with food and body image, it's important to understand its limitations.

Intuitive eating is not a treatment for eating disorders or other mental health conditions. These conditions require specialised care from qualified professionals. While intuitive eating principles may be incorporated into a recovery plan, they should always be used in conjunction with professional therapy and medical supervision.

What's Expected of You?

Your active participation is key to making the most of your counselling experience. Be open and honest about your thoughts and feelings, even if it feels uncomfortable at first. Trust in the process and remember that change takes time.

Consistent attendance and open communication with your counsellor are essential. The insights gained in sessions are meant to be applied to your everyday life, but there's no pressure to be perfect. The goal is progress, not perfection.

Addressing Your Concerns

If you have any concerns about your counselling experience, please don't hesitate to discuss them with your counsellor. Whether it's about the approach, the pace, or anything else that's bothering you, open communication is key.

If you find it difficult to express your concerns in person, consider writing them down and sharing them via email or bringing them to your next session.

Medical Screening

Before we embark on your counselling journey, we'll conduct a brief medical screening to gather important information about your mental and physical health. This helps us tailor your treatment plan to your specific needs and identify any underlying health conditions that may require additional support.

Confidentiality

Rest assured that everything discussed in counselling is confidential, with a few exceptions (such as a risk of harm to yourself or others). This allows you to feel safe and secure while sharing your thoughts and feelings.
